Textbook
Stewart, J. (2012). Single Variable Calculus:Early transcendentals with vector functions (7th ed.). Belmont, CA: Brooks/Cole.
Course Description
In this course, we will rigorously examine topics in single-variable calculus: limits, continuity, differentiation, applications of differentiation, integration, applications of integration, and an introduction to differential equations. We will also begin preparation for the AP Exam to be taken next May. This course is essentially a college-level mathematics course, and therefore will be taught as such. Expect assignments each night, and prepare to study hard for each quiz and exam.
Calculator Policy
The graphing calculator with a built-in computer algebra system (CAS) will be an integral part of this course. Students are recommended to purchase a TI-89 or TI Nspire CAS so they can use it for this course and future courses. However, students have the option of checking out a TI-89 from their teacher to use for the semester. The expectation is that the TI-89 is returned at the end of the semester in the same condition as when it was checked out.
Grading Information
Your overall grade will be determined by the following:
30% Quizzes/Projects/AP Practice
40% Unit Exams
10% Midterm
20% Final
The grading scale, as defined by CCSD, is as follows:
A 90 – 100
B 80 – 89
C 74 – 79
D 70 – 73
F 0 – 69
Note that AP courses receive one extra quality point.
Homework Policy
Homework is essential for success in AP Calculus. The assignment sheet provided on the blog represents a minimal number of problems to be worked each night. Students are highly encouraged to work extra problems as needed to obtain mastery of the material.
Contact and Tutoring Information
I am generally available for tutoring before school from 7:30 to 8:15 each morning, and I can be available some afternoons with advanced notice. Email is by far the best way to contact me. My school email address is given above.
Absentee Policy
Although it is essential that you attend every class, sometimes absences cannot be avoided. If you are absent, check with Dr. Stockton for any assignments missed and fellow students for lecture notes. Please note the following absenteeism policies regarding specific assessments:
AP Exam Information
In May, students will have the opportunity to complete AP exams. When AP exam registration opens, Dr. Ingle will share AP exam information via Edmodo. Therefore, KMHS students should join the 2019 – 2020 AP Exam Edmodo group using student join code (ask Coach Golden). After joining Edmodo, students should share a unique parent code (available from the student page) with a parent or guardian.
Academic Integrity
In AP Calculus, we have high standards for academic integrity for all students. All students must abide by the following honor code: I will not lie, cheat, or steal in my academic endeavors. I will act if I become aware that the Honor Code is compromised. Any violations of the honor code will result in consequences in alignment with KMHS policies.

Absentee Policy
Although it is essential that you attend every class, sometimes absences cannot be avoided. If you are absent, check with Dr. Stockton for any assignments missed and fellow students for lecture notes. Please note the following absenteeism policies regarding specific assessments:
- Quizzes: The main goal of a quiz is to provide feedback to students regarding their level of mastery of content at a certain point in the unit. Since it is impossible to return a make-up quiz to a student in time to achieve the goal stated above, students will receive a blank copy of the quiz upon their return to class that they may work and review on their own time or during tutoring sessions. A subset of the ensuing unit exam containing problems similar to the missed quiz will be used to determine the student’s percentage grade.
- Projects: Absenteeism does not excuse you from submitting projects – you must find some way to submit your project to me before the end of your class period. Parents may drop off a hard copy or you may send me the project via email. Points will be deducted from projects submitted late, regardless of the reason for the late submission.
- Unit Exams: If you are absent on the day of an exam, you must take the make-up exam before the next unit exam. Failure to make up an exam as specified above will result in a grade of 0 for that unit exam. If you are absent the day before a unit exam, you are still expected to take the exam upon your return to class the next day.
